Food truck expands their business thanks to their hard work and the Watts Business Source Center

Tortacos Cansado del Camino is a family affair, run by Jose Oscar Acua, his wife Ruth Alatriste, and their daughter, Kayla. The food truck’s menu boasts delicious tortas, tacos, sandwiches, wraps, and even vegan options, with stellar reviews on Google and Facebook to match.

As with any good business, the owners of Tortacos Cansado del Camino have an eye for growth.

KNOWING WHERE TO GO FOR HELP

Acua approached Fernando Borja, one of Vermont Slauson Economic Development Corporation’s business coaches, at our Watts Business Source Center, regarding improving his business and how to qualify for business loans. Borja provided technical and business consulting through one-on-one mentorship. Through these sessions, Acua gained training and knowledge that equipped him and his family to better run their business, including business tax, invoices and proposals, and financials and marketing. Borja also directed the founders of Tortacos Cansado del Camino to the free workshops offered by VSEDC.

From the initial meeting until now, Acua and his family have attended a total of four small business workshops over a period of six months. The workshop topics ranged from Industry Analysis and Business Description, to Marketing Analysis and Marketing Strategies. The latest workshop attended, Business Competition and Business Financials, helped Acua assess the difference in quality, quantity, and customer service between his family business and the competition.

THE RESULT OF PUTTING IN THE WORK

Acua and his family put in the work to partner with the Watts Business Source Center and it worked to their advantage. Acua says of the experience, “Thanks to the technical assistance that Fernando and the Watts Business Source Center were able to provide, Tortacos Cansado del Camino was able to learn how to run a business.”

Tortacos Cansado del Camino has seen a marked increase in revenue, and is now loan ready. Acua has set his sights toward expanding his business through buying a second food truck.

His next step is to apply for a small business loan. All of us here are excited for what’s to come for with Tortacos Cansado del Camino as the family builds a legacy business.
