VSEDC is overjoyed to share the news of the soft opening of Wah Gwaan Jamaican Kitchen & Bar in Leimert Park. This exciting venture was made possible through the support of VSEDC’s CDFI loan program, which helped owner Deandrea Jones turn her dream of a brick-and-mortar restaurant into a reality.
A most welcome restaurant in Leimert Park
Located prominently at the Crenshaw Blvd and Vernon Ave intersection, Wah Gwaan Jamaican Kitchen & Bar adds to the animated culinary delights of South Los Angeles. It caters to an established demand by offering a fusion of healthy and delectable Jamaican cuisine in a warm and inviting setting. However, the path to opening day had its share of hurdles.
Jones initially faced challenges securing the necessary permits for essential equipment and facility upgrades. At this critical juncture, VSEDC Business Coach Terry Gubatan stepped in, assessing her needs and guiding her through a successful application for a CDFI loan, paving the way for Wah Gwaan’s grand opening.
Jones was grateful, stating, “If it wasn’t for VSEDC, I don’t know if I’d be open today. I am so thankful that we made it happen!”
Now, the community can savor the authentic flavors of Jamaica, from savory jerk chicken to the traditional ackee and saltfish, all within a vibrant and accessible space.
