The National Coalition of 100 Black Women – LA Chapter, honored VSEDC and our President and CEO, Dr. Jazz Keyes, for our work in economic development at the organization’s 10th Annual Economic Empowerment Tea and Awards
On Saturday, April 18th, The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Los Angeles Chapter hosted their 10th Annual Economic Empowerment Tea & Awards. This year’s theme, “Workforce Development as Economic Justice” focused on real-talk surrounding community investment. We are proud to share that our Dr. Jazz Keyes was recognized for her commitment and dedication to South LA’s small businesses.
As Dr. Jazz received her award, she spoke about the importance of building pathways for the future, while also respecting the pathways that were built before us, like the one our founder, Marva Smith Battle-Bey, created for South LA by launching Vermont Slauson Economic Development Corporation and through her tenure as the 6th national president of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women between 2006-2009. It was a full circle moment.
The 100 Black Women’s event is a major move for our youth’s future, with proceeds funding the Dr. Thelma Eaton Intergenerational Scholarships and the Marva Smith Battle Bey Academic Scholarships. These programs provide the essential financial backing for women re-entering the workforce, as well as for high school seniors striving to reach their academic goals.
VSEDC was honored to be included as part of the legacy of South LA’s leaders.
